The European Union is urging China to ensure its products are safe for European consumers. EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva made the appeal Monday during talks in Beijing with Li Changjiang, Minister of the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. Kuneva acknowledged China is working to improve its market surveillance, but said more still must be done to prevent dangerous products from being exported.
The EU has expressed concern about Chinese-made small electronics, toys and other exported goods. Western consumers first raised concerns about Chinese-made drugs following the deaths last year of several people in Panama who had taken medicine contaminated with a chemical used in anti-freeze.
